Dreamin' of a Welsh Christmas....
10/24/08 10:28:08PM, by gaabi
And, if you're Welsh, do you do Christmas and what do you do?Ceri said that also wasn't much of a bid deal for his family. My family didn't do much for it, some years we just had pizza and went out to the Chinese movies, other years we had presents and even a live tree we planted in our front yard. Today I make a big deal of this with my kids, of decorating the house, getting a tree and letting them decorate it, making presents for relatives and cookies for friends and neighbors, driving...
"Colorful" Welsh-Americans
01/19/09 06:57:20PM, by gaabi
American history is full of hard-working, innovative and brave Welsh Americans but my favorites are the more "interesting" Welsh Americans. People have talked about John Rhys, who was present at the Newport Chartist uprising and may have fired shots and who was later in Texas reselling (several times) the land grant he received for his part in the Texas Revolution, but he was by no means alone in our history. Here in Oregon we have the story of Ellis Hughes and the Willamette Meteorite . The...
Support Welsh Lacrosse
06/04/10 09:08:32PM, by George McKay
Hello all,The World Lacrosse Championships, held every four years, will take place in July in Manchester, England. The Wales Senior Men's team will be one of 30 nations competing in what will be the largest lacrosse event in history. The Welsh Lacrosse Association (WLA) receives little funding from government or sports governing agencies. As a result, eachplayer has been required to pay a minimum of 1,000 GBP in order to cover their partifipation in this historic event. However, funding is...
The Welsh Diaspora
12/06/12 03:19:21PM, by Harold Powell
Our family has always considered itself part of the Welsh Diaspora--or economic refugees, if you will, driven from home by what it perceived whether real or not as a lack of opportunity. It retained fervent devotion to the homeland and kept in contact with loved ones left behind. The link below is to an official study of the Welsh Diaspora complete with maps of its concentration around the world. I had always heard about the colony in Patagonia but was surprised to see my own home state of...
Welsh classes on Skype
03/20/10 02:34:14PM, by Vicky Loving
I have been attending a Welsh class that I found on Meetup.Com and we just did our first session on Skype. It was amazing! I'd never used it before but it almost as good as being there in person. I am encouraging everyone interested to join us. Look for Dysgu Cymraeg on Meetup.com, you might have to look in the Philadelphia area, not sure. Any problems please contact me and I will help. Hope to see some of you there!!! Here's a link:...

Welsh is "unrecognised" on Kindle
04/11/13 08:59:48PM, by Gaynor Madoc Leonard
The Welsh publisher, Y Lolfa, currently has a petition asking Amazon topublish Welsh language books on Kindle. http://www.deisebelyfrau.org/ (bilingual). A report in today'sWestern Mail tells of how Y Lolfa published some Welsh books last year on Kindle but had to describe them as English as Welsh is unsupported on Amazon's Kindle. Languages such as Galician, Catalan and Basque are apparently supported but Kindle has no immediate plans to support Welsh. They have recently accepted a...
Welsh Dragon Tattoo
08/06/09 03:54:21PM, by Chad Davis
I'm thinking about having a Welsh Dragon tattooed on my arm. I've never had a tat before and this is one of those 'I'm turn 40 and I'm fighting it' type of things. Anyway, I want to put it on my right arm and the artist tells me that the dragon should be facing forward. This would require him to flip the image from the way it is usually displayed. My question is, by 'flipping' the dragon does this present any negative cultural implication? Having never visited Wales (yet) I don't want to do...
Welsh Coast Magazine
07/25/12 12:08:25AM, by Gaynor Madoc Leonard
Yesterday I bought the July edition of Welsh Coast which has a very interesting feature on The Oyster Catcher in Rhosneigr, Anglesey. This restaurant has been set up by John Timpson, Chairman of Timpson shoe repair and key-making stores. Mr Timpson and his wife, Ann, have, over 30 years, fostered 90 children and adopted 2 as well as having 3 of their own; helping disadvantaged young people is a part of their lives. Having transformed The White Eagle at Rhoscolyn into a successful business,...
Welsh Dialects (North vs. South)
05/13/12 02:37:52AM, by Brett Hull
I have been learning Cymraeg (South) for a couple of years and have come across several differences is word usage and some structural differences between Northern and Southern Welsh. There may be some differences, that I am not aware of, between East and West Welsh . Much like the differences that exist between American and British English. I have listed below some of the differences I have noticed. Please share differences in Welsh Dialects that you are aware of. South NorthLike hoffi...
